CONJUNCTION (KATA SAMBUNG)
Definisi
A conjunction is a word that connects clauses, sentences, or words in the same clause. Conjunctions are essential in constructing coherent sentences by linking ideas smoothly.
(Konjungsi merupakan sebuah kata yang menghubungkan klausa, kalimat atau bahkan kata di dalam klausa yang sama. Konjungsi berperan penting dalam membuat kalimat yang koheren dengan menghubungkan gagasan-gagasan secara tepat)
Jenis-jenis Conjunction
1. Coordinating Conjunctions
These conjunctions join words, phrases, or independent clauses of equal rank.
Examples: FANBOYS (For, And, Nor, But, Or, Yet, So)
I went to the store for I needed some groceries.
- I like tea and coffee.
He didn't study, nor did he attend classes.
She is smart but lazy.
Would you like tea or coffee?
It was cold, yet he didn't wear a coat.
She was tired, so she went to bed early.
2. Subordinating Conjunctions
These conjunctions join an independent clause with a dependent clause, showing a relationship such as time, cause, condition, contrast, etc.
Examples: because, although, since, unless, if, when, while, before, after.
- Although it was raining, we went for a walk.
I stayed home because it was raining.
We’ll go to the park after lunch.
Finish your work before you go out.
While she was cooking, the phone rang.
I’ll call you when I get home.
If you study hard, you will succeed.
We won’t go unless it stops raining.
Since he arrived, we’ve been busy.
3. Correlative Conjunctions
These conjunctions work in pairs to join equal sentence elements.
Examples: either…or, neither…nor, both…and, not only…but also.
- Either you study hard, or you might fail the exam.
- She likes neither coffee nor tea.
- Both the teacher and the students were excited.
- He is not only intelligent but also hardworking.
